Klambratún
Klambratún is one of the larger parks in Reykjavík and is bustling with life all year round. It has one of the most popular frisbee-golf courses in the city and players do not hesitate to use the course even when it snows during the darkest months and use frisbee discs with flashing lights.
Klambratún has been an open area within the residential area since Norðurmýri and Hlíðar were settled in the early 20th century, but did not become a formal public park until around 1964 when construction began under the guidance of landscape architect Reynir Vilhjálmsson.
The park is bounded by Hringbraut, Rauðarárstígur, Flókagata and Langahlíð, but the area is named after the farm Klambrar.
Kjarvalsstaðir is at the northern end of Klambratún and in this beautiful building, which was designed by Hannes Kr. Davíðsson architect, is the exhibition space of the Reykjavík Art Museum and a café. Since Kjarvalsstaðir opens out to the park, there is now a small paved square that is surrounded by seating stalls in two directions and therefore ideal for all kinds of events.
In addition to the traditional paths, benches, grassy lawns and vegetation, the garden has a children’s playground, a football pitch, a basketball court and a beach volleyball court. In the winter, cross-country skiers use Klambratún for outdoor activities and the children in the neighborhood come with sledges and skis and slide down the slope in the horseshoe in the northeast corner of the park.
Klambratún is a very popular outdoor recreation area among dog owners in adjacent neighborhoods.
Dog ownership in Reykjavík has never before been as widespread as now and the owners of these man’s best friends are calling for better facilities for them in the city. In this presentation of the neighborhood plan, an idea is presented for a fenced off-leash yard for dogs and people at Klambratún.

Klambratún is a very popular outdoor recreation area among dog owners in adjacent neighborhoods. There you can see dogs enjoying the fresh air with their people every day, but there have never been more dog owners in the history of Reykjavík. On every public holiday in the calendar there has for many years been an informal dog meeting between 9 and 10 in the morning in the horseshoe that is in the northeastern part of the park at the corner of Langahlíð and Flókagata.
Here depicted is a suggestion that instead of the neighborhood center between Kjarvalsstaðir and the horseshoe in the northeast corner, there will be a fenced garden, with lawns, paths, benches and a small pond where dogs will be allowed to go off-leash. Structures and paved parking lots of the neighborhood center would disappear and be replaced by more parkland in this popular outdoor recreation area. According to the local plan, the neighborhood center should go.
